R.E.M. La fine di un’epoca!

La fine di un'epoca, quella della purezza del rock alternativo che riesce a scalare le classifiche e ad arrivare negli stadi

Il giorno dell’annuncio ufficiale dello scioglimento dei R.E.M. la sensazione di smarrimento di molti è stata senza precedenti. I R.E.M. erano più di una band come tante che smetteva di incidere dischi o andare in giro in tour: è stata davvero la fine di un’epoca, quella del rock alternativo che riesce a scalare le classifiche e ad arrivare negli stadi. La purezza, la sincerità, la professionalità che il quartetto (e dal 1997 trio) di Athens rappresentava erano davvero unici al mondo. Partire dalle college radio, dall’underground vero e proprio ed arrivare lì dove in pochi si sono potuti permettere.

Tuttavia, il 21 settembre arriva l’addio, via web, come si addice oramai a questi frenetici tempi moderni: «All things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way». Ed una frase che rappresenta l’universo R.E.M. Più di qualunque lungo ragionamento: «Watching a group of 19-year-olds trying to change the world». Seriamente commovente.

 

Il cammino lungo 31 anni è stato compresso artisticamente in quindici dischi, dagli esordi indie di “Murmur“, all’ascesa alle classifiche di “Document“, dal capolavoro “Automatic For The People” al rock di “Monster“, per arrivare al sound nuovo di “Up” e il capitolo finale con “Collapse Into Now“. Di raccolte ne abbiamo già avute, e neanche poche: sette. Tra raccolte di rarità, canonici best of e compilation comprendenti il meglio del periodo I.R.S. (la prima label dei R.E.M.).

Ma la Warner Bros non si fa per nulla pregare ed ecco che, a cadavere ancora caldo, esce il 15 novembre l’ottava compilation per i R.E.M.: “Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011“. Il doppio cd comprende tutti i principali singoli a partire dall’EP “Chronic Town“. La chicca sono i tre inediti proposti in chiusura, le ultime tre tracce registrate dai R.E.M poco dopo le sessioni di Collpase Into Now. Si intitolano “A Month Of Saturdays“, “We All Go Back To Where We Belong” e “Hallelujah“. La seconda traccia, l’unica scritta e registrata interamente dopo l’ultimo disco, è stata resa disponibile ieri su internet e la si trova facilmente su Youtube. Inutile dire che è bellissima e che i R.E.M mancheranno tantissimo.
